Somalia’s deputy PM dismissed from Senate for over 2 years of non-attendance

MOGADISHU (Adduun) – Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Salah Ahmed Jama, was removed from the Senate for failing to attend four consecutive sessions without offering any valid explanation for his absence, the speaker of the Upper House of Parliament said on Saturday.

“Senator Salah Ahmed Jama missed four consecutive sessions of the Upper House of the Federal Parliament of Somalia without providing a valid explanation for his absences; as a result, he lost his membership in the Upper House of the Parliament of the Federal Republic of Somalia,” Senate leader said.

Efforts by the Speaker to quickly fill the vacant seat were met with rejection from the senators, who argued that the articles in the draft constitution related to this action had not been approved. They emphasized that regional states have the right to nominate replacements for removed senators. However, Somaliland, from which Jama hails, has seceded from Somalia and does not recognize the country’s federal system or constitution.
