Somalia: Jubaland president walks out of NCC meeting, jets back to Kismayo

MOGADISHU (Adduun) – Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe has left the National Consultative Council meeting which is ongoing in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu and flied back to Kismayo on Monday, following a stalemate in talks over a one-year extension of regional presidents’ terms.

The regional president firmly rejected the proposal for a unified one-person, one-vote election across all federal member states in November 2025, as well as the idea of granting regional leaders a one-year term extension. This proposal, however, has strong support from Somalia’s president, who is aiming to secure a return to power in the 2026 presidential elections.

Madobe insisted that any electoral agreement should include consultations with Puntland, which boycotted the conference, as well as Khatumo State.

On Sunday, Jubaland authorities alleged that the Somali president’s office had initiated a smear campaign aimed at tarnishing their president’s reputation as political tensions intensified.
