Puntland absent as Somalia’s federal, regional leaders gather in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU (Adduun) – Somalia’s National Consultative summit kicked off in Mogadishu on Wednesday amid escalating tensions between the federal government and authorities in a number of regional states, Villa Somalia said.

The leaders of Jubaland, Southwest, Hirshabelle and Galmudug states as well as Somali President and his Prime Minister attended the conference despite the absence of Puntland leadership. Puntland did not attend several previous NCC summits, citing its dispute with the federal government.

The leaders will discuss issues, including security, revitalizing stalled offensive against Al-Shabaab and the implementation previous agreements between the federal member states and the federal authorities in Mogadishu, according to a statement issued by the president’s office.
