Egypt begins preparations for its military deployment to Somalia

MOGADISHU (Adduun) – Egypt is moving forward with plans to deploy its military to Somalia, facing strong opposition from Ethiopia and a number of Somali regional governments, Caasimada Online news website reported on Wednesday, days after Villa Somalia’s openly endorsed the deployment.

Cairo has sent weapons, military advisors, and commando units to Somalia in a bid to establish a military presence in the country. Egypt aims to finalize its plans before December 31, the deadline set by Somalia’s government for the withdrawal of Ethiopian forces.

Somali army units, accompanied by Egyptian military advisors, have been deployed to critical supply lines used by Ethiopian troops in Somalia to hinder any further troop deployments ahead of their withdrawal. However, the news website did not specify the areas to which the Egyptian and Somali forces have been sent.

Since Egypt began sending shipments of weapons to Somalia, Ethiopia has deployed an additional 7,000 soldiers to the country in a bid to strengthen its presence in the neighboring Horn of Africa nation, despite the Somali government’s insistence on their withdrawal.

Somali government officials said that the decision to expel Ethiopian troops is linked to Addis Ababa’s naval base agreement with Somaliland, indicating that retraction of the agreement is a necessary option for Ethiopia if it wishes to maintain its military presence in Somalia.
