MOGADISHU (Adduun) – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to embark on a diplomatic visit to Somalia and Ethiopia early next year, following his successful mediation of a “historic” agreement that resolved the year-long diplomatic standoff between the two Horn of Africa nations.

“I will visit Ethiopia and Somalia in the first two months of the New Year,” Erdogan said in a statement on X.

The two countries have agreed to initiate technical discussions on securing alternative commercial maritime access for landlocked Ethiopia, distinct from Addis Ababa’s earlier pursuit of a naval outpost along the Red Sea.

The dispute ignited early last year when the self-declared region of Somaliland, which has been unrecognized by Mogadishu since its 1991 declaration of independence, inked an agreement granting Ethiopia access to a coastal strip along the Red Sea for the construction of a naval base, a decision that sparked fierce opposition from the Somali government.

Turkey, which remains committed to substantial investments in both Somalia and Ethiopia, has successfully mediated an end to the dispute after two previous rounds of talks it facilitated faltered, with Ankara now consolidating a dominant geopolitical position in the Horn of Africa—an influence unmatched by other Middle Eastern powers vying for influence in the region.
