Acting UN envoy meets Somalia’s PM after talks with Jubaland leader

MOGADISHU (Adduun) – Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Tuesday met with acting UN envoy James Swan in Mogadishu, following Swan’s visit to Kismayo this week, where he urged Jubaland leader Ahmed Madobe to return to the National Consultative Council after his recent withdrawal.

“The meeting focused on bolstering cooperation between Somalia and the United Nations, with particular emphasis on supporting the Government’s priority initiatives,” the office of Somali Prime Minister said in a statement on X.

“These include stabilising regions reclaimed from Kharijites, moving towards direct elections, and tackling pressing humanitarian issues.”

The talks reportedly focused on the election dispute that led to Ahmed Madobe’s exit from the meeting of the National Consultative Council. Despite James Swan’s efforts to persuade the Jubaland leader to mend his rift with the federal government, Madobe remains resolute in his plans to hold a unilateral election in his region.
