MOGADISHU (Adduun) – A secret motion by members of Somalia’s parliament to remove Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has come to light at the last minute, leading to the cancellation of the parliamentary meeting scheduled for Saturday, Caasimada Online news website reported on Sunday.
The motion crafted by MPs from Puntland has been in the works for some time, and its proponents aimed to advance it while Speaker Adan Mohamed Nur was out of the country. In his absence, his deputy, Sa’diyo Yasin, who was also aware of the situation, would oversee the process to facilitate the Prime Minister’s removal.
The MPs who formulated the motion aimed to catch the government off guard and remove Barre from power in a manner reminiscent of former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khayre, who was ousted in just seven minutes during a parliamentary meeting in 2020.
However, Saturday’s meeting was delayed after Speaker Adan Mohamed Nur became aware of the motion and promptly returned from a trip to the United Arab Emirates. Known for his close ties with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Madobe thwarted multiple parliamentary efforts to oust the government and played a key role in passing several controversial laws and constitutional amendments.
The MPs behind the motion are convening in Mogadishu to discuss their next steps and whether to continue with their plans, despite the government and the speaker of parliament being aware of their intentions.
This follows closely on the heels of a motion submitted by MPs against Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, who is currently embroiled in a dispute with his State Minister Ali Bal’ad, a close ally of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Internal wranglings within government ministries plagued by corruption and nepotism are sparking rival motions in parliament. It remains uncertain how Speaker Adan Mohamed Nur will manage to suppress these motions, and whether his handling of the situation might jeopardize his position amid increasing frustration from MPs.
