Talks between Somalia’s federal, regional leaders over elections hit deadlock

MOGADISHU (Adduun) – Talks between Somalia’s federal and regional leaders in Mogadishu have hit a new deadlock, as Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe firmly rejected a proposed one-person, one-vote elections intended for entire south and central regions of the country, Caasimada Online news website reported on Saturday.

Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre held closed-door talks with Madobe on Friday night in an effort to persuade him to accept the proposal, but their attempts did not yield any progress.

The Prime Minister and Southwest state leader Abdiasis Laftagaren met once again with Jubaland President Ahmed Madobe on Saturday, but the outcome of their discussions remains unclear.

The Somali President suggested that regional presidential elections, allowing the public to vote for their leaders, take place in 2025. While all other attendees agreed, Jubaland leader Ahmed Madobe opposed this idea, insisting on an indirect voting method instead.

The resolution of the current standoff remains uncertain, especially given Puntland’s absence from the meeting, as it refused to participate, claiming that the government has strayed from the constitutional path.
